If Dreams Were Pennies….

We’d all be broke.

What’s up with the world now-a-days? I see more people with statuses saying they aren’t dreaming big enough, or that they just can’t reach their dreams, than anything else. Why is that? Is reality so hard that we cannot reach our goals?

I think not. Someone once told me that the mind cannot tell the difference between imagination and fact. It is only once we start thinking that it labels the two separate. If that’s the case, why do we believe the fact and not the imagination? Think about this: what would our world be like if Henry Ford hadn’t dreamed? or bill gates? or those first British colonies? What would our world be like if the Internet hadn’t been invented? or penicillin discovered? What if Einstein and Newton had given up in school? What if Shakespeare had listened to his teachers? What if every President had listened when his teachers said, “Not everyone can be President?” What if the women activists gave up before they ever got the vote? What if the Equalities Movement gave in under the pressure?

They were all dreamers. Were they small dreamers? No. Their dreams were HUGE, massive creatures that blew most people’s minds. A machine that could do calculations in milliseconds that can sit on a desk? A network of information that spans the world? A playwrite that can reach any audience? A cart with no horses? A place where women and blacks and asians and Latinos were equal? It was madness. And I’m sure they were told so. Over and over again, they had impossible dreams. And yet, here our world is transformed by those inane ideas.

Now, it’s our turn to dream. Let’s reawake that inner dreamer. Let the innocence of your childhood return. No, don’t be naive, but don’t give up on those dreams you have. You just might be the next change in the world.

I want you guys to do a little exercise for me. Break out those planners or a wall calendar. Now, grab a red sharpie (for calendars) or a pen (for planners). Decide on the dream you want to achieve this year, and write down a game plan. Write it in something than cannot be erased so that you cannot back out of it.
For mine, I have decided that by December 31st, I will be an agented author. Every two weeks from now until the middle of March, I will be writing a chapter or editing a chapter. By March, I will begin to send out queries. March, people. I didn’t realize how attainable my dream really was until I broke it down into its separate compartments.

Tell me your dream that you WILL achieve, and tell us WHEN you will achieve it. I want a date. I’ve already put mine. I can’t wait to see yours. 🙂

About S. G. Ricketts

I am a dreamer. This page holds all of the dreams and desires and hopes and wishes of the first of my two dreams: to share my imagination with the world. For those of you who have read a book or written a book, these stories are not merely words on a page. They are living, breathing creatures, worlds so compellingly real that you can smell the sweat and feel the rain. This is what I want to share ...with all of you. Yes, becoming rich and famous would be fabulous. I won't deny that. However, it would be so much more satisfying to see my book in the hands of someone on the bus, hear my book talked about at a restaurant, see a cluster of fan-art. I want to inspire the mind to imagine different worlds and different situations. If I can achieve that, I will have achieved my dream.
